US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced the selection of Chris Leon to lead the San Luis Port in San Luis, Arizona. The announcement came in a June 6 news release.
According to the CBP news release, as port director, Leon will be responsible for overseeing all operations, budget, personnel, and enforcement at the Area Port of San Luis. This includes the passenger processing crossing, the commercial crossing, and the Yuma International Airport. He will also oversee modernization efforts currently underway at the Port of San Luis; construction is expected to wrap up in 2028 and will double the size of the port.
"I am excited and humbled to lead the men and women at the Port of San Luis, and I look forward to working closely and collaboratively with our local stakeholders to ensure the region remains prosperous while also protecting the public we are proud to serve," said Leon.
Leon has more than 25 years of law enforcement experience with CBP; his federal law enforcement career began in San Luis, Arizona. Most recently, he served as Area Port Director in Phoenix, where he was responsible for passenger operations at Sky Harbor International Airport; the Global Enrollment Center; the Phoenix Deferred Inspections Office; and oversight of Mesa Gateway Airport and Scottsdale Airport.
Before Phoenix, Leon was Assistant Port Director for the Area Port of San Luis. He has also been Public Relations Liaison for the Joint Field Command in Tucson; Acting Port Director for the Area Port of Douglas; and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) mediator with the Alternative Dispute Resolution Program in Washington D.C., according to CBP.
"Mr. Leon is a strong, proven leader that will serve us well as the Area Port Director in San Luis," said Guadalupe Ramirez, Director of Field Operations for CBP in Tucson.
U.S. Border Patrol, a federal law enforcement agency under DHS, is responsible for safeguarding the nation's borders and preventing illegal entry of people and contraband. Established in 1924, it operates in 328 ports of entry and protects 7,000 miles of land borders and 95,000 miles of maritime borders.
