City of Tucson issued the following announcement on Aug. 9.

During the 2021 virtual awards ceremony for the Arizona Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA), Albert Elias, the former assistant city manager for the City of Tucson, was presented with a Distinguished Planning Pioneer award. Every year, the Arizona Chapter of the APA honors Arizonans who have made outstanding planning contributions to the profession and to their communities. Elias dedicated more than 36 years to the City in various planning roles and departments before his retirement this year. During his career with the City of Tucson, Elias played a major role in the revitalization of downtown Tucson, local funding initiatives, the Urban Land Institute Daniel Rose Fellowship, Imagine Greater Tucson, and more. Many planners in the City of Tucson looked to Elias as a mentor during his career.
