The University of Arizona recently celebrated its Wildcats men's wheelchair basketball team, which captured the National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball championship on March 29 in Illinois. The team was honored at a ceremony and reception at the Student Recreation Center, with several university leaders in attendance.
University President Suresh Garimella praised the team for its dedication. "What you did on the court that day was very special," he said, referring to a game he witnessed during his first week in Tucson. The Wildcats' victory marked the team's third consecutive finals appearance and first championship win.
Team captain Ben Thornton and head coach Mike Beardsley expressed gratitude to supporters. Beardsley acknowledged the support from the university's administration, particularly from Peter Hughes, director of adaptive athletics. "You really allow me to run my program," he said.
Amanda Kraus, vice president for student affairs, announced that Arizona Adaptive Athletics would integrate with Campus Recreation next year, aligning with the university's commitment to disability inclusion. Desireé Reed-Francois, vice president and director of athletics, highlighted the team's inspirational impact.
The University of Arizona will host the 2026 National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball men's and women's tournaments at McKale Memorial Center. Peter Hughes aims to break attendance records, emphasizing community support.
The Tucson City Council plans to recognize the team's achievements with a proclamation on May 6. In the fall, team members will receive their national championship rings during a football game halftime.
