Erik Weihenmayer, known for being the first blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest, is set to address the University of Arizona's graduating class at their Commencement on May 16. Recognized globally for his achievement, Weihenmayer's climbing endeavors include the Seven Summits—the highest peaks across each continent.

His mountaineering feats extend beyond Everest. He has climbed frozen waterfalls in Nepal and Canada and navigated the lengthy Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in a kayak. Reflecting on these accomplishments, he shares, "As a blind climber, I have lived a life that no venture capitalist would have put money on, but I have been so lucky to have been a part of great teams, innovating through barriers and shattering people's perceptions of what is possible."

Diagnosed with a rare eye disease called retinoschisis at 14, Weihenmayer overcame challenges to excel in wrestling at a national level and found a passion for rock climbing. He later pursued higher education, obtaining a double major in English and communications from Boston College. As a middle school teacher in Arizona, he utilized innovative methods such as Braille seating charts to facilitate learning, and co-founded the No Barriers nonprofit. The organization, serving 10,000 people annually, promotes a "no barriers life."

Weihenmayer's impact extends to media, featuring in documentaries and authoring several bestselling books. His latest appearance is in the film "Soundscape," awarded at the Banff Mountain Film Festival. At the Commencement, he will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Arizona College of Education.

The university also honors four other individuals with honorary degrees. Ginny L. Clements, a notable Tucson businesswoman, is recognized for her philanthropic contributions. As managing partner of Indigo Partners LLC, William A. Franke is applauded for his involvement in aviation and his support for the W.A. Franke Honors College. Gabrielle Giffords, a former U.S. congresswoman, is awarded for her public service and advocacy. Mark Smith, an alumnus and agricultural innovator, is honored for his sustainable farming initiatives.

The event will take place on May 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Arizona Stadium.
