The Tucson Metro Chamber is spearheading opposition to Proposition 414, a proposed half-cent sales tax intended to fund city services in Tucson. The Chamber argues that the measure places an undue burden on taxpayers and lacks focus and accountability.
Several organizations, including the Tucson Association of Realtors and Southern Arizona Leadership Council, have joined the Chamber in opposing the proposition. They express concerns about its temporary nature and urge funding critical services like police and fire through the general fund at levels comparable to other major cities in Arizona.
A comparison of police budgets as a percentage of the general fund reveals that Tucson allocates 30.4%, which is lower than cities like Mesa (53.2%) and Phoenix (48.1%). The Chamber warns that if passed, Tucson's sales tax would become the highest among major cities in Arizona.
The special election for Proposition 414 will be conducted by mail only, with ballots mailed out on February 12 and due back by March 5. Election Day is set for March 11, with select polls open for ballot drop-off.
In related developments, the Chamber's Public Policy Council has engaged with city planners regarding zoning amendments aimed at promoting denser development along key corridors. The Regional Transportation Authority's draft plan renewal is also under review, with community feedback being considered before final approval later this year.
The Chamber has released its updated Public Policy Guide for 2025, outlining advocacy priorities across several areas including economic competitiveness and public safety.
