July 3, 2008: Death of Sue Alexander

Sue Alexander, born on August 20, 1933, was an American writer known for her contributions to children's literature. She authored 26 books for children and numerous stories for newspapers and magazines. Alexander also worked as a children's book reviewer for the Los Angeles Times. She played a significant role in the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators as a charter member and advisory board member. In recognition of her dedication to mentoring writers, the society established two awards in her name. She passed away on July 3, 2008. Her legacy continues to inspire and support aspiring writers. Although she lived much of her life away from Tucson, her achievements resonate with the literary community, including those in Tucson.

July 5, 1945: Birth of Michael Lennox Blake

Michael Lennox Blake was born on July 5, 1945, and is best known for his novel "Dances with Wolves," which he adapted into a film. He won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1991. Blake's early life was marked by frequent moves due to his father's military career, but his family eventually settled in Tucson, Arizona. He attended the University of Arizona, where he developed an interest in writing. Blake remained connected to Tucson throughout his life, participating in local literary events and supporting Native American causes. He died on May 2, 2015, in Tucson. His work continues to inspire writers and filmmakers, reflecting his strong ties to the community.
