The 1st Avenue Citizens’ Corridor Planning Task Force is set to convene its initial meeting ahead of the design phase for the 1st Avenue Improvement Project, which spans from Grant Road to River Road. The task force comprises residents, workers, and business or property owners in the vicinity of 1st Avenue who frequently use the corridor. This group aims to represent the interests of transit users, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

The first meeting will take place on Thursday, June 27, 2024, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Woods Memorial Library located at 3455 N 1st Avenue. The session is open to the public and includes a Call to the Audience segment where attendees can provide comments. However, task force members are restricted from discussing items not listed on the agenda.

The project involves constructing a new bridge over the Rillito River, reconstructing a four-lane roadway, installing continuous and accessible sidewalks, enhancing bicycle facilities, improving drainage systems, and upgrading traffic signals. These efforts aim to enhance safety along the corridor while improving connections for active transportation modes such as walking and cycling.

Regular meetings between the task force and project team will facilitate feedback and identify areas needing attention or improvement.

Funded by a half-cent excise tax approved by voters in May 2006 within Pima County's special taxing district, this initiative is part of RTA’s comprehensive regional transportation plan managed by the City of Tucson.
