University of Arizona Athletics issued the following announcement on Jan. 24.

While darkness brought a premature end to the second round of the Arizona Intercollegiate at Tucson Country Club, Arizona Men's Golf made the most of their 32 holes on Monday by jumping to the top of the leaderboards at 25-under par with an 11-stroke lead over second place New Mexico. The Wildcat trio of Christian Banke, Chase Sienkiewicz and Johnny Walker posted top-10 scores in the tournament's opening round.

"We got off to a fantastic start and didn't slow down until the round was called for darkness," said head coach Jim Anderson. "Leaving the course with five holes left to complete the round was an unfortunate turn for us, but we had quality scores throughout our lineup all day. We had a ton of guys go low today, but Christian, Chase and Johnny really zoned in to lead us. I'm excited to see our team come back out and play more great golf on Tuesday."

Banke carded 4-under round of 67 on Monday morning, which was the second lowest among all players in the first round. His quintet of birdies was punctuated by his eagle of the par 5, fifth hole. Sienkiewicz also recorded an eagle of his own on the 10th hole on his way to a first-round score of 68. Walker's day began with a clean and steady first round of 15 pars and three birdies.

Sam Sommerhauser joined Walker with the team's low round in the afternoon when the day was called with five holes left to play. The sophomore was 4-under par with no bogeys through 13 holes.

Arizona's four eagles on the day propelled their dominance as the par-5 scoring kings with a 10-stroke advantage over Arkansas. The Cats also dominated Tucson Country Club's par 4's by tying with Iowa State for the lowest scoring average.

The Wildcats and the rest of the field will resume their second round at 9 a.m. (MST) on Tuesday before teeing off in the third and final round. Arizona will look to capture its fifth consecutive team championship at the Arizona Intercollegiate while the trio of Banke, Sienkiewicz and Walker will look to give the program as second consecutive individual champion as well.
