Sean McGoffin, Chief Border Patrol Agent of the Tucson Sector, said that the successful arrest and handover of a wanted fugitive to Mexican authorities demonstrated the strength of joint U.S.-Mexico law enforcement efforts. The statement was made on X.
“Fugitives from any country are not safe here,” said Sean Mcgoffin, Border Patrol Chief. “This arrest highlights the effectiveness of multi-agency enforcement efforts conducted with bi-national information sharing! Thank you USBP FOB, ICE, and HSI for helping us bring this dangerous person to justice in his own country!”
Cross-border law enforcement between the U.S. and Mexico has recently intensified in Arizona, targeting fugitives and transnational criminals. According to reports, in August 2025, Mexico extradited 26 high-ranking cartel figures to the U.S. in a coordinated effort with American agencies, signaling renewed momentum in binational security. This case reflects broader collaborative operations along the Arizona corridor, as reported by the Associated Press.
The Tucson Sector of the U.S. Border Patrol remains one of the nation’s busiest, with nearly 34,000 migrant apprehensions recorded in July 2023 alone. While these figures include general immigration arrests, they underscore the sector’s capacity to also pursue fugitives. This operational data was detailed in an August 2023 Congressional hearing report.
Binational information sharing between U.S. Border Patrol and Mexican authorities has expanded through initiatives such as the Mérida Initiative, enabling intelligence-gathering training and biometric data exchanges. These measures aim to track criminal activity and improve coordinated responses. This trend is outlined in a security policy whitepaper from UC San Diego’s U.S.–Mexico Center.
McGoffin began his CBP career in 1996 as a field agent in Tucson and has led multiple sectors including Havre (Montana-Canada border), Big Bend (Texas), and Yuma before returning to Arizona. His career history was reported by Arizona Public Media in November 2024.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security, is tasked with safeguarding the nation’s borders and preventing illegal entry, as outlined on its history webpage. Since its establishment in 1924, CBP has operated across 328 ports of entry, protecting 7,000 miles of land borders and 95,000 miles of maritime borders.
