May 24, 1836: Birth of Don Leopoldo Carrillo
Don Leopoldo Carrillo was born on May 24, 1836. He was a Mexican-American entrepreneur and one of Tucson’s earliest pioneers. Carrillo became a naturalized American citizen in 1873. He played a significant role in the economic development of Tucson. He invested in real estate and agriculture, contributing to the growth of the local economy. Carrillo built the Carrillo Gardens, a popular recreational area that became a community hub. His efforts helped shape Tucson’s early infrastructure and social landscape. Carrillo’s work and dedication left a lasting impact on Tucson, reflecting his commitment to the city’s development. He passed away on December 9, 1890, but his legacy in Tucson endures.
