Tucson CBP arrests Guatemalan national for firearm-related smuggling

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents at the Ajo station have announced the arrest of a Guatemalan national for smuggling with a firearm, along with two Mexican nationals. Tucson Sector Chief Sean McGoffin shared this update in a post on X on April 2.

According to McGoffin, the incident occurred near Lukeville, Arizona. The Guatemalan man had previously been apprehended as a juvenile in April 2019 and released with an immigration court date. His case was terminated in October 2024, leaving him without immigration status. Following his recent arrest, he now faces federal charges of Alien Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Alien Inadmissibility under Section 212. The two individuals he was transporting face charges of Alien Inadmissibility under Section 212. The case remains under investigation.

The Ajo Station, located in Why, Arizona, covers environmentally sensitive and protected lands such as the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge. It is situated nine miles south of Ajo on Route 85 and oversees an area that includes 52 miles of international border and 8,800 square miles of operational territory.

The Tucson Sector spans much of Arizona, extending approximately 262 miles from the New Mexico border to Yuma County’s border. According to CBP's webpage dedicated to the sector, it employs about 3,700 agents across nine stations located in Why, Casa Grande, Douglas, Bisbee, Nogales, Sonoita, Tucson, Three Points, and Wilcox. Originally known as the Nogales Sector when established on July 1, 1924, its headquarters were relocated to Tucson two years later.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security tasked with safeguarding national borders and preventing illegal entry of people and contraband. Established in 1924, CBP operates at 328 ports of entry and protects over 7,000 miles of land borders and approximately 95,000 miles of maritime borders.
