A woman from San Francisco is honoring the wishes of her late husband and his brother by donating $14.2 million to the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson. The donation, made by Pat Gerleman, will provide scholarships for students entering medical school.

The contribution is in memory of James "Jim" Anthony Gerleman, Pat's husband, and John Edward Gerleman. "An education from the U of A can leave an indelible mark in the lives of our students," said University President Suresh Garimella. He expressed gratitude to Pat Gerleman for this "transformative gift" which will give students financial freedom to pursue their dreams.

James Gerleman inherited $700,000 from his brother John, a U of A alum who admired the College of Medicine – Tucson. Before passing away, John instructed Jim to use these funds for family education and donate any remaining amount to the college. Through investments, Jim grew the account significantly before his death in 2023.

"The gift is not a portion of a large estate," said Pat Gerleman. She emphasized that it represents years of hard work and dedication by both Jim and John towards making a difference in others' lives.

The bequest will support two programs: the Pre-Medical Admissions Pathway (P-MAP) and the Honors Early Assurance Program (HEAP). P-MAP offers intensive preparation for medical school to Arizona students facing obstacles. HEAP provides early admission opportunities for talented undergraduates from W.A. Franke Honors College.

Dr. Michael M.I. Abecassis praised the donation as an honor that pays tribute to the Gerlemans' legacy by educating future physicians at one of six colleges under U of A Health Sciences.

"This transformative gift is a shining display of generosity," added Dr. Michael D. Dake, senior vice president for U of A Health Sciences, highlighting its long-term impact on healthcare communities.

The donation forms part of the university's Fuel Wonder campaign aiming to raise $3 billion for various initiatives including student support and research advancements across disciplines.

John-Paul Roczniak noted that this generous bequest exemplifies how donations can alleviate financial burdens on future physicians while linking Jim and John's legacies with student success at UofA.
