University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, a prestigious honor for engineers. The academy announced its 2025 class on Tuesday, which includes 128 new U.S.-based and 22 international members.

Garimella was recognized for his "contributions to microscale heat and mass transport, academic leadership, and service to the nation." His election places him among distinguished engineers whose work has significantly impacted research, industry, and society.

The selection process involves peer recognition for pioneering advancements in engineering fields and leadership in major projects. Garimella expressed his gratitude by stating, "I am honored to have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering... I am grateful to my students and collaborators on whose work this recognition rests."

Garimella became the University of Arizona's 23rd president in October 2024. He is also a University Distinguished Professor in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. Before joining the university, he was president of the University of Vermont, where he advanced research funding and accessibility. Earlier, he held positions at Purdue University as Goodson Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering and executive vice president for research and partnerships.

An accomplished researcher in energy and thermal transport, Garimella has over 625 publications and holds 16 patents. He has mentored more than 200 students who now hold significant positions globally.

His contributions extend beyond academia into national and international science policy initiatives. He served on the National Science Board and as a Jefferson Science Fellow with the U.S. Department of State's Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas. He is also an elected fellow of several prestigious organizations.

David W. Hahn, Craig M. Berge Dean of the College of Engineering, remarked, "I'm proud to see President Garimella honored for his impact as an engineer and a leader."

Garimella joins nine other current or former University of Arizona faculty members in the academy:
