One of the largest exhibitions featuring works by contemporary artist Hank Willis Thomas is set to open on January 18 at the University of Arizona Museum of Art. Titled "LOVERULES, From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation," the exhibition will display 90 pieces, including photography, sculptures, textiles, and more.

"LOVERULES," pronounced as "Love Over Rules," explores themes such as social history and equality through mixed media and mass-produced imagery. Olivia Miller, director of the University of Arizona Museum of Art (UAMA), stated that the exhibition questions art's role in civic life. "How does visual culture like advertising create narratives that shape our notion of what is valuable in society? How does advertising affect the way we see each other?" she asked.

The exhibition features several series by Thomas, including "Branded" and "Unbranded: Reflections in Black by Corporate America." In these works, Thomas examines brand advertising's impact on African American identity by using sports iconography and removing slogans from advertisements.

The artworks are part of Jordan Schnitzer's collection. Schnitzer is a prominent art collector with over 22,000 pieces in his possession. He previously collaborated with UAMA for an exhibition titled "The Art of Food." Speaking about Thomas' work, Schnitzer said, "His themes, one image after another, force us to deal with issues that far too long have plagued society by not respecting or accepting each other irrespective of race, gender, sexual orientation or religion."

Both Thomas and Schnitzer will visit the campus on February 15 for a public conversation at the Center for Creative Photography auditorium. UAMA plans additional exhibits related to "LOVERULES," including a pop-up curated by students and an exhibit showcasing artwork from local high school students.

Andy Schulz, vice president for the arts and dean of the College of Fine Arts at UAMA expressed excitement about hosting "LOVERULES." He remarked on its interdisciplinary nature and potential relevance across campus curricula: "I'm thrilled to see 'LOVERULES' at UAMA – not only because of its scale and caliber but because it is an inherently interdisciplinary show that promises relevance and application across campus curricula."

Miller emphasized that this exhibition provides an opportunity for local communities to engage with Thomas' work on a large scale: "This is the largest exhibition of Thomas' work in the Southwest...it's introducing a new artist to the area."

A media preview is scheduled for January 17. Media members can contact Chris Weir at crweir@arizona.edu to schedule visits. Additionally, Thomas and Schnitzer will conduct a press tour on February 14 before an evening VIP reception requiring prior registration.

The exhibition will be open until June 21.
