The City of Tucson is inviting the community to a ribbon-cutting event for the Stone Avenue Complete Streets Improvement Project. The celebration will take place on December 17, 2024, from noon to 1 p.m. at Jacome Plaza, located at 101 N Stone Ave.
The project involved redesigning the roadway between Alameda Street and Ochoa Street to improve functionality for pedestrians and cyclists. This includes extending a two-way protected bike lane south from Alameda Street through downtown Tucson. Additionally, Stone Avenue has been repaved, and green stormwater infrastructure has been installed as a protective barrier for the bike lanes.
Tucson Mayor Regina Romero stated, “The Stone Avenue Complete Streets Project shows how we are continuing to deliver to Tucson voters.” She highlighted that the new bike lane would enhance safety by connecting downtown destinations while protecting bicyclists. "Made possible with funding from Prop 101 and Prop 411, this is another example of what is possible when we invest in ourselves," she added.
The event will feature speeches from Ward 1 Council Member Lane Santa Cruz, Ward 6 Council Member Karin Uhlich, and Department of Transportation and Mobility Director Samuel Credio. A bike ride ribbon-cutting ceremony will follow their addresses.
Funding for this project came from two voter-approved initiatives: Prop 101 Tucson Delivers Better Streets and Prop 411 Safe Streets.
