Chad Berman, director of hockey operations and men's head hockey coach at the University of Arizona, has been appointed as an assistant coach for Team USA at the upcoming World University Games in Italy this January. Berman joins a coaching team that will lead 23 American Collegiate Hockey Association players, including two University of Arizona student athletes, forwards Riley Ruh and Justin Hughes.
This marks the first time an Arizona Hockey coach has been selected to join Team USA. The team is set to compete against international squads from Poland, Japan, Ukraine, and Slovakia.
"It is a great honor to serve as the coach for the team," stated Berman. He is currently in his tenth year as head coach of the University of Arizona program. His accolades include winning the Western Collegiate Hockey League Coach of the Year award twice and being named a finalist twice for the American Collegiate Hockey Association's coaching award.
Berman's leadership has seen the Wildcats recognized for their community involvement, earning five national ACHA Community Service awards.
Arizona Hockey, which operates under Campus Recreation, plans to relocate next season to a new facility in the Mosaic Quarter. This multipurpose sport and entertainment center near Kino Parkway and Interstate 10 will feature the MQ Iceplex, covering 175,000 square feet. Construction on this facility began in November.
