The University of Arizona has been recognized as a Fulbright Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Leader for the fourth consecutive year by the U.S. Department of State. This distinction highlights the university's dedication to fostering international exchange through the Fulbright Program, which supports students, scholars, and professionals in global educational opportunities.
"Receiving this noteworthy distinction since the inception of this award is truly an honor," stated Marla Franco, vice president of HSI Initiatives. She emphasized that increasing awareness and engagement with the Fulbright Program is part of their efforts to provide equitable access to enriching opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.
The Fulbright Program facilitates international exchanges by sending U.S.-based participants abroad for research or lectures while hosting foreign representatives at domestic institutions. The designation as a Fulbright HSI Leader recognizes schools that promote these opportunities on campus and engage actively with exchange participants. The University of Arizona was previously acknowledged in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
A Hispanic-Serving Institution must have an undergraduate student body comprising at least 25% Hispanic students. According to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, there are currently 600 HSIs in the United States, including 20 in Arizona. These institutions serve nearly two-thirds of the nation's Hispanic undergraduate population.
This year saw 51 colleges and universities being recognized as Fulbright HSI Leaders across various categories: seven associate colleges; five baccalaureate colleges and special focus institutions; ten master's colleges and universities; and 29 doctoral universities.
"Selection as a Fulbright HSI leader demonstrates our university's commitment to amplifying access to the Fulbright Program," said Karna L. Walter from W.A. Franke Honors College. Walter encouraged students, faculty, and alumni to deepen global connections through participation in the program.
Institutions were honored for their involvement in sending or hosting U.S. and international Fulbright participants during the academic year 2023-2024. Elliott Cheu highlighted that "being recognized again as a Fulbright HSI Leader underscores our ongoing commitment to cross-cultural scholarship."
Since its establishment in 1946, the Fulbright Program has aimed at fostering mutual understanding between nations by awarding over 1,700 fellowships annually for scholarly exchanges involving more than 160 countries worldwide.
Jenny Lee shared her experience as a former Fulbright Scholar: "My time as a Fulbright Scholar in South Africa was inspired by my deep commitment to fostering global educational connections." Her experiences have influenced her role at U of A significantly.
