The University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins addressed the recent campus demonstration that took place near Main Gate Square in Tucson, where an unauthorized encampment was removed by the University of Arizona Police Department and partner agencies. This action, taken on May 9, aligns with the University's campus use policy.

Despite potential concerns regarding graduation ceremonies scheduled for today and this weekend, President Robbins confirmed that commencement and other events will proceed as planned. "Commencement and other ceremonies will go forward as planned," he stated.

On Thursday, 15 convocations and celebrations occurred without incident, ensuring the safety of all attendees, including 1,800 individuals leaving a convocation at Centennial Hall near the encampment site.

Further details about the demonstrations and actions taken can be found on the University News page. For information regarding this week's celebrations and safety guidelines, individuals are encouraged to visit the Commencement website.

President Robbins emphasized that graduation events celebrate students' achievements and foster a sense of community. He acknowledged challenges facing society but stressed maintaining a welcoming environment for family members joining the festivities. "We have a responsibility as hosts to try to ensure a welcoming and safe environment for all," he noted.

He reiterated his commitment to enforcing campus rules designed to balance free expression with operational integrity. "We will remain steadfast in enforcing our campus rules," said Robbins.

The president expressed gratitude towards those involved in organizing graduation events and voiced confidence that participants would enjoy celebrating student accomplishments.

This message was initially shared via email with students, faculty, staff, and designated campus colleagues.
