Craig T. Nelson, an Emmy Award-winning actor and University of Arizona alumnus, will deliver the commencement address at the university on May 10. Known for voicing Mr. Incredible in Pixar's "The Incredibles," Nelson has a career spanning television, film, and stage.
"There is, I believe, a desire within each of us to fulfill a destiny and to heed the call either spiritually or personally that we can make a difference," Nelson said. He hopes his experiences will inspire graduates to bring renewal and compassion to the world.
Nelson's career highlights include his role as Hayden Fox in "Coach," which earned him multiple Emmy nominations and a win in 1992. He also appeared on Broadway in "Ah, Wilderness!" and portrayed Zeek Braverman in "Parenthood." His film credits include "Poltergeist," "All the Right Moves," "The Proposal," among others.
For five seasons, Nelson guest-starred on CBS's "Young Sheldon" as Dale Ballard. Originally from Spokane, Washington, he attended the University of Arizona on a drama scholarship starting in 1965 but left before completing his degree for an acting opportunity in Hollywood.
Nelson credits much of his success to Peter R. Marroney, who led the university's theater department for 36 years. The Marroney Theatre was recently renovated with its stage named after Nelson due to an anonymous donation.
"Having my name associated with the theater named for an early mentor of mine, Peter Marroney, is a humbling honor," Nelson said earlier this year.
University President Robert C. Robbins praised Nelson: "Craig T. Nelson's career embodies the determination and exploration that we hope to inspire in all our graduates." Robbins emphasized that many 2024 graduates missed their high school graduations due to COVID-19 and sees Nelson as fitting for their send-off.
Commencement will be held at Arizona Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
