The City of Tucson Planning and Development Services Department (PDSD) has announced a virtual meeting to discuss upcoming changes to the city's adaptive reuse regulations. This initiative invites community members to learn about these changes and provide their input. Adaptive reuse involves repurposing existing buildings for new uses while maintaining their original architectural features.

The recent passage of HB2297 by the Arizona State Legislature mandates that by January 1, 2025, at least 10% of all existing commercial, office, or mixed-use buildings must be utilized for multi-family residential development or adaptive reuse. Despite local codes already permitting the reuse and reinvestment in older buildings, this state legislation necessitates further updates.

On June 18, 2024, Tucson's Mayor and Council instructed staff to amend city codes to comply with the state's municipal zoning requirements. PDSD is seeking feedback from the community on proposed modifications to Tucson’s development standards as mandated by the state legislature.

The virtual meeting titled "Adaptive Reuse Amendment Daytime Meeting" will take place on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. via Zoom. Interested individuals are encouraged to register for participation.

For questions regarding the meeting or changes to adaptive reuse regulations, Principal Planner Carver Struve can be contacted at carver.struve@tucsonaz.gov.
