U.S. Congressman Juan Ciscomani from Arizona's 6th District has joined his Republican colleagues in urging House GOP leadership to prioritize the passage of a new Farm Bill. This legislative package is crucial for setting the agriculture industry's priorities and policies over a five-year period, as well as providing nutrition assistance to millions of Americans.
The current Farm Bill, which was reauthorized in 2023 after being passed in 2018, is set to expire this year. Ciscomani emphasized the importance of updating the bill rather than simply extending it, citing rising inflation and increased production costs that have impacted farmers and ranchers. "I am proud to join this letter urging our leadership to prioritize passage of the Farm Bill to support our communities," said Ciscomani.
Representative Mark Alford expressed similar sentiments about the urgency of passing the bill. "We are honored to stand alongside 139 of my colleagues to lead a letter that shows House leadership that Republicans are committed to passing a Farm Bill that supports our nation’s constituents, farmers, ranchers, and rural communities," Alford stated.
Ashley Hinson also stressed the need for immediate action: "I led 139 of my colleagues – the majority of the House Republican Conference – in calling for Republican House leadership to bring the Farm Bill up for a vote as soon as possible."
Earlier this year on May 24, 2024, the House Agriculture Committee passed H.R. 8467, known as the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2024. The effort was spearheaded by Representatives Mark Alford (MO-04), Ashley Hinson (IA-02), and Jennifer Kiggans (VA-02).
Ciscomani has been vocal about this issue and recently co-authored an op-ed with Arizona Farm Bureau President Stefanie Smallhouse advocating for swift action on passing a new Farm Bill.
