On October 6, 2024, at around 8 p.m., construction crews will start setting up traffic control measures at the intersection of Grant Road and Alvernon Way. This marks the beginning of a traffic shift to prepare for several months of extensive underground utility work.

The work is expected to last through March 2025 and will involve travel restrictions in the area. Crews will install temporary travel lanes, new water lines, sewer lines, and underground storm drain improvements. From October 6 until early November, there will be two northbound and two southbound lanes on Alvernon Way and one lane in each direction on Grant Road. Left turns at the intersection will not be allowed.

Starting in early November until March 2025, there will be one southbound lane and two northbound lanes on Alvernon Way while maintaining one lane in each direction on Grant Road. Construction crews are scheduled to work from approximately 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Access to businesses around the intersection will be limited to right turns only.

This project is part of the larger Grant Road Improvement Project from Alvernon Way to Swan Road (Sparkman Boulevard to Venice Place), which began in late May 2024. Upon completion by the end of 2026, it aims to feature six travel lanes, landscaped medians, buffered bike lanes, sidewalks, transit stop upgrades, indirect left turns, protected intersection improvements at Alvernon Way and Grant Road, as well as a large underground storm drain system.

The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) has invested over $1.4 billion into transportation projects aimed at enhancing mobility and safety within the region. The RTA's funding comes from a half-cent sales tax collected within Pima County following voter approval in May 2006. The City of Tucson manages this particular phase of the project under the RTA plan.
