The City of Tucson has received a proposal to rename the Historic Sixth Avenue Underpass to honor and recognize the late Donovan Durband. Mr. Durband’s participation in the revitalization of Downtown Tucson was widespread and deeply valued by all those who love Tucson. His contributions as Tucson Downtown Alliance Director, City of Tucson Ward 6 Council Aide, and Park Tucson Administrator were combined with the tireless work he did on his own time to help return Downtown Tucson to its rightful place as the vital heart of the Tucson community.

As part of the process to rename city-owned assets, the Department of Transportation and Mobility is seeking public input and feedback on the commemorative naming of the Historic Sixth Avenue Underpass, located between Toole Avenue and Seventh Street in downtown Tucson, to The Donovan Durband Sixth Avenue Underpass.

To provide comments and feedback on this proposal, please email michael.graham@tucsonaz.gov by 5 p.m. on Friday, October 25, 2024.

The proposed renaming of the underpass also includes repainting the Sixth Avenue Underpass and installing 24 two-foot by three-foot baked porcelain enamel color panels of enlarged vintage Downtown Tucson postcards from Mr. Durband’s collection. Public artist Stephen Farley, creator of the Broadway Underpass murals leading into downtown, will lead the effort to refurbish the underpass.

City officials encourage residents: "Ask a Question. Report an Issue. Submit a Suggestion." For further inquiries or suggestions, call 311 or visit Tucson 311 to submit a request.
