On Monday, August 19, 2024, Southern Arizona Paving, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM), is scheduled to begin two roadway improvement projects on Elm Street from Campbell Avenue to Tucson Boulevard and Tucson Boulevard from Sixth Street to Grant Road. These projects are part of the Tucson Mayor and Council approved 5-Year Collector Street Program.
Crews will start by installing ADA-compliant ramps throughout the project limits. In late September, they will commence roadway improvements on Elm Street from Campbell Avenue to Tucson Boulevard. This phase includes lowering manhole covers and water valve covers, milling the top layer of asphalt, and repaving with new asphalt. During this period, one-way travel will be maintained along with residential and business access.
In early November, crews will initiate similar improvements on Tucson Boulevard from Sixth Street to Grant Road. The work will also involve lowering manhole covers and water valve covers, milling the top layer of asphalt, and repaving with new asphalt. Throughout this phase, one travel lane in each direction will be maintained as well as access to residential and business driveways.
The project excludes improvements to the Speedway Boulevard and Tucson Boulevard intersection. Crews are scheduled to work Monday through Friday from approximately 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an expected completion date in December 2024.
Electronic message boards will alert motorists ahead of the project commencement. The schedule may change due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.
In June 2022, the Tucson Mayor and Council approved $15 million per year for five years to preserve and improve selected collector streets in the City of Tucson. This collector street improvement project was selected by the Independent Oversight and Accountability Commission (IOAC) as part of the 5-Year Collector Street Program. It is funded annually with $11 million from the Highway User Revenue Fund (HURF) and $4 million from the City of Tucson General Fund.
