Tucson's Mayor and Council have initiated the process to fill the vacancy left by Council Member Steve Kozachik in Ward 6, as he steps down from his position to pursue a job opportunity with Pima County.

According to City Attorney Mike Rankin, the City Charter stipulates that the new council member must have been a qualified elector in the City of Tucson for three years, with at least the last year being a qualified elector in Ward 6. Additionally, while there is no requirement for the selected candidate to be from the same political party as the former council member, Mayor and Council have decided that the seat should be filled by a Democrat, in alignment with the voters' choice.

Rankin emphasized that although the Charter does not specify a timeline for the appointment process, Mayor and Council are encouraged to act promptly. As part of the selection process, interested individuals are invited to submit their letters of interest and resumes to the City Clerk by midnight on April 15, 2024.

The Mayor and Council will review the submissions and select the top four candidates, who will then participate in a special meeting at the end of April to present their reasons for wanting to serve as a council member.

For those seeking to apply or obtain more information, they can contact the City of Tucson at 255 W. Alameda St., Tucson, Arizona 85701.

The City looks forward to welcoming a new council member to represent Ward 6 and continue serving the community effectively.
