WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06) played a significant role in the passing of the FY2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Congress' annual defense package. Ciscomani represents two crucial military installations, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base (DMAFB) in Tucson and Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista, as well as over 70,000 veterans across the district.
"This year's NDAA represents a bipartisan, bicameral agreement to invest in our military and ensure they have everything they need to quickly and decisively counter current and future threats," said Ciscomani. "As the representative for Fort Huachuca and DMAFB, I have a deep understanding of just how crucial the annual NDAA is to not only national defense strategy as a whole but also to our men and women in uniform, and their families."
The FY2024 NDAA includes several critical provisions for service members and their families. It provides crucial Military Construction authorization for Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, ensuring necessary infrastructure upgrades and improvements. Additionally, it fully funds the deployment of National Guard to the southwest border, enhancing border security measures.
One of the significant highlights of the NDAA is the 5.2% increase in pay for the troops, which is the largest raise in over 20 years. This increase demonstrates the government's commitment to supporting and recognizing the dedication and sacrifice of the military personnel.
The bill also addresses various other important aspects. It requires the Department of Defense (DoD) to use or transfer to southwest border states all border wall materials in its possession, contributing to border security efforts. Furthermore, it authorizes additional funds for the construction of new schools for military children, new family housing, and new military barracks, improving the quality of life for service members and their families.
Recognizing the importance of environmental protection, the NDAA mandates the DoD to identify locations where there is known contamination of drinking water systems on military installations and develop detailed plans to remediate and clean up these sites. This provision ensures the health and well-being of the personnel stationed at these bases.
In light of recent events, the bill also prohibits the DoD from working with EcoHealth Alliance on research in China and the Wuhan Institute of Virology. This provision aims to safeguard national security and prevent any potential risks associated with foreign collaboration in sensitive areas.
Lastly, the NDAA continues to protect servicemembers who decide against taking the COVID-19 vaccine. This provision respects individual choices while maintaining the overall readiness and safety of the military forces.
Overall, the passing of the FY2024 NDAA is a significant milestone in strengthening the nation's defense capabilities. Congressman Ciscomani's support and advocacy for this package demonstrate his commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the military personnel and their families. With emboldened adversaries in China, Russia, and Iran, it is crucial to have a well-equipped and prepared fighting force. The NDAA sets the path for a robust defense strategy that will protect democracy across the world and safeguard the interests of the United States.
