U.S. Congressman Juan Ciscomani and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan have called on the Biden Administration to suspend and cancel appointments made through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) "CBP One" app. This request comes as the United States experiences a surge of illegal immigrants at the southwest border, with record-breaking encounters being reported by CBP.
In their statement, the Congressmen express concern over the prioritization of illegal immigration over legitimate trade and travel. They highlight the decision of CBP to close or limit access to Ports of Entry in Lukeville, Arizona, San Ysirdo, California, and Eagle Pass, Texas. This move is aimed at allowing agents and officers to process more illegal immigrants into the country. The Congressmen argue that instead of enforcing U.S. immigration law to deter illegal immigration, CBP has chosen to process appointments made through the CBP One app.
"The Biden Administration once again prioritizes illegal immigration over legitimate trade and travel by deciding to suspend operations at our Ports of Entry while continuing to process illegal immigrants through the CBP One App," said the Congressmen. They further criticize the administration for processing nearly 1500 appointments daily through the app, despite CBP lacking the manpower to staff Ports of Entry.
The Congressmen emphasize that the closure or suspension of operations at a Port of Entry should be a last resort. They argue that non-essential operations, like processing CBP One app appointments, should be the first to be shut down when redirecting personnel to address an influx of illegal immigrants. According to them, the Biden Administration's actions are negatively impacting local economies and the daily lives of southwest border residents, while also prioritizing illegal immigration over American citizens.
The surge of illegal immigrants at the southwest border is a pressing issue that requires careful consideration. As calls to suspend and cancel appointments made through the CBP One app grow louder, it remains to be seen how the Biden Administration will respond to these concerns raised by Rep. Ciscomani and Judiciary Chairman Jordan.
