Five score in double figures as Women's Basketball breaks free late to beat Yavapai College

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (5-2, 2-1 in ACCAC) trailed after the first half but bounced back in the second half on Saturday in a road win at Yavapai College (3-5, 0-2).The Pima Community College women's basketball team (5-2, 2-1 in ACCAC) trailed after the first half but bounced back in the second half on Saturday in a road win at Yavapai College (3-5, 0-2).

  • The No. 18 ranked Aztecs (Division II) defeated the Roughriders (Division I) 73-63.
  • The Roughriders scored the first bucket to start the fourth quarter and tie the game at 53-53 but the Aztecs used an 8-0 run to retake the lead at 61-53. They outscored the Roughriders 12-3 to start the final period to make it 65-56 with 5:36 remaining.
  • Up 67-63, sophomore Matehya Aberle (Holbrook HS) scored in the paint to give Pima more breathing room at 69-63 with 1:36 left. The Roughriders missed their final three shot attempts and the Aztecs converted with free throws from sophomores Luisa Chavez (Rio Rico HS) and Angel Addleman (Palo Verde HS) to put the game away. The Aztecs went 17 for 22 from the free throw line.
  • The Aztecs took an 18-8 lead early in the second quarter but Yavapai outscored the Aztecs 24-12 in the quarter to put Pima down 32-27 at halftime. The Aztecs started the third quarter scoring the first eight points to retake the lead at 35-32. The Aztecs outscored the Roughriders 46-31 in the second half.
  • Sophomore Aiona Johnson finished with a team-high 16 points as she went 7 for 13 from the field. She also had six rebounds and two steals.
  • Aberle finished 5 for 9 from the floor and posted 12 points and six rebounds.
  • Chavez closed it out with 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals while fellow sophomore Jaden Leslie (Dobson HS) added 11 points. Sophomore Angel Addleman (Palo Verde HS) contributed with 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Gym on Wednesday when they host Scottsdale Community College. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
