Aztecs Volleyball snaps five-match skid after toppling Phoenix College

The Pima Community College volleyball team (4-9, 1-2 in ACCAC) got one back in the win column on Friday after beating Phoenix College (1-6, 0-4) at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

  • The Aztecs picked up victories in the final two sets defeating the Bears in four games (25-19, 25-27, 25-8, 25-20).
  • The Aztecs took a 1-0 lead after earning the first set win. The second set went back and forth down the stretch. From the time the score was knotted at 17-17 to the end of the second set, there were nine ties. The Bears took the second set in the end to tie the match.
  • The Aztecs reclaimed the lead after establishing an early lead. Up 5-3, the Aztecs went on to score six straight points to make it 11-3. The Bears countered with three straight points. Pima led 11-6 and cushioned their lead by scoring the next nine points to take a 20-6. Sophomores Deanna Almaguer, Isabel Hansen (Rincon HS) and Jessica Bright-Schade (Safford HS) all had kills during that stretch. Almaguer also had an ace and Bright-Schade and Hansen had block-points. Almaguer had the final kill to put the Aztecs up 2-1.
  • There were 10 lead changes in the fourth set. Tied at 18-18, the Aztecs got a block-point by Almaguer and a kill from Hansen to take a 21-18 lead. The Aztecs scored seven of the final nine points to earn the win and close out the match. Almaguer sealed it with a kill.
