Tucson-based GAP Ministries is expanding its outreach.
The nonprofit social service has grown its foster care program by opening a new center for southern Arizona foster families and children, a recent KGUN report said. GAP can now host approximately 300 child-parent reunions each month with their new "family center." The organization will operate with guidance from the Arizona Department of Child Safety.
"We're excited to see what more we can do and how we can help," Beth Sierra, GAP Ministries director, said in the report.
Sierra believes that there are not enough families for the number of foster children who exist.
"We have a huge need," she told KGUN. "We don't have enough foster families for the children that are coming into care."
Sierra's goal is to fix that and find a home for every child.
"We would love reunification for every family," she said. "We'd love for every child to go back home if they are able and safe. That's why we have the rooms the way we do."
Other officials from GAP Ministries also commented on the expansion.
"Trying to visit with somebody in an office space would be really difficult," Jason Ayers, GAP's director of Culture and Communication, told KGUN. "Now, we have a living room and a play place. Kind of what you would have at your house."
