City of Tucson issued the following announcement on Nov. 1.
Tucson Water and the Tucson Fire Department will hold the annual controlled burn at Sweetwater Wetlands on Wednesday, Nov. 3, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The Wetlands will be closed to the public for the day and reopen Nov. 4. The annual burn is the first to be held since March 2020. As a result, it will be larger than usual, spanning multiple basins across 17 acres. The burn will take place early enough so plenty of healthy habitat will be available during the winter migratory bird season. People who are sensitive to smoke or ash generated by the controlled burn are asked to take precautionary measures or avoid the area. Since 1999, Tucson Water and the Tucson Fire Department have conducted annual controlled burns at Sweetwater Wetlands. The burns have been used successfully to help control invasive species of flora and fauna and preserve important open water habitat, while providing valuable fire suppression training for regional wildland firefighters.
