Arizona's homeless population has been hit hard by COVID-19, but Gov. Doug Ducey has taken action to help.

He announced $975,000 from the state's Coronavirus Relief Fund has been allocated to 12 organizations to help with food and shelter. The money also will be used to clean and sanitize areas to prevent the spread of the virus, according to the Office of the Governor website.

“Organizations throughout the state are working around the clock to support individuals and families experiencing homelessness, providing them with shelter and food and keeping them safe during COVID-19,” Ducey said in a press release. “These dollars will bolster their efforts. I am grateful to everyone working to protect our most vulnerable and the many businesses and organizations who have generously donated to the Arizona Coronavirus Relief Fund to help those in need.”

Organizations receiving funding include the Gospel Rescue Mission, Our Family Services and Primavera of Tucson. Phoenix organizations include Human Services Campus, St. Vincent de Paul Phoenix, Phoenix Rescue Mission, Chicanos Por La Causa, UMOM New Day Centers and A New Leaf. Flagstaff had two organizations receive funding as well as one in Yuma.
