According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the United States is experiencing steady growth in its older adult population, while younger age groups are declining. The number of Americans 65 and older climbed by 13% from 2020 to 2024, as the population under 18 dropped 1.7%. Over the past century, the number of older adults has surged from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study found that almost half of this demographic—nearly 28 million people—are likely to need long-term services and supports. The study also predicts that more than a third will ultimately need to utilize nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
