John Paul “Pete” McCaffrey passed away peacefully at his home in Tucson, Arizona, on March 4, 2012, surrounded by family. His death marked the conclusion of a life devoted to basketball and community service.

Born on December 24, 1938, in Missouri, Pete developed an early passion for basketball. He excelled in high school, earning a scholarship to the University of Kansas, where he distinguished himself as a standout player.

In 1963, Pete joined the U.S. men’s national basketball team and competed in the FIBA World Championship, helping the team secure a fourth-place finish. The following year, he played a key role in the U.S. team’s gold medal victory at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

After retiring from basketball, Pete relocated to Tucson, Arizona, in the early 1970s. There, he became a respected member of the community, coaching youth basketball and mentoring young athletes. He was widely recognized for his dedication and kindness.

Pete also invested in local businesses and supported various charitable organizations, leaving a lasting impact on many lives within the Tucson community. His contributions to both basketball and community service continue to be remembered.

Pete McCaffrey’s passing was a significant loss to Tucson, but his legacy of athletic excellence and commitment to helping others continues to inspire those who knew him.
