Alexander Raymond Kellner was born on August 26, 1924, in Tucson, Arizona. He grew up in a family that loved baseball. His younger brother, Walt, also became a major league pitcher.

Alex began his baseball career in Tucson, showing early promise. He batted right-handed and threw left-handed. This unique combination made him stand out. He joined the Philadelphia Athletics in 1948 as a starting pitcher.

Kellner played for the Athletics, which later became the Kansas City Athletics, until 1958. He had a solid career with them, known for his consistency on the mound. In 1958, he moved to the Cincinnati Reds, and in 1959, he joined the St. Louis Cardinals.

Throughout his career, Kellner played in 321 games and had a respectable record. His control and skill as a pitcher were evident in his performances. He retired from Major League Baseball after the 1959 season.

After retirement, Kellner returned to Tucson. He remained connected to the local baseball scene, often mentoring young players. His experiences and knowledge made him a valuable asset to the community.
